Sadhana Jewels by Yogi Bhajan
“If your Sadhana is more important to you than your neurosis, you are fine, if your neurosis is more important than your Sadhana, you are not.” Now what is this Sadhana? Sadhana is a test of self grit.” Yogi Bhajan, 1/22/91
“Guru Nanak said it so clearly. He said it very simply, “Amrit Velaa Sach naa-o, vadi-aa-ee veechar.” (In the ambrosial hours before the dawn chant the True Name and reflect deeply upon His greatness.) Now people say, “Why ambrosial hour?” Ray of the sun hits the earth sixty degrees, and in the evening ray of the sun again hits sixty degrees. And life is by the sun ray. That law God cannot change. There’s nothing religion can do. There’s nothing a holy man can do. The pattern of the neuron in the psyche of its own involvement and in its own indulgence, has to be revived every time. And the best is when you can do the best. That’s why that ambrosial hour is when you take bath, you sit down, and you start a war. You start a war so that you can have peace inside. There’s nothing more than that. If the mind is not at peace, it doesn’t have the harmony, it cannot tranquilize with the opposition. It cannot win the war of challenge. Person may look beautiful, he may buy the whole world with money. That person shall be unfulfilled, empty, unhappy. That is why to solve the situation, Guru Nanak said, , “Amrit velaa sach naa-o, vadi-aa-ee veechar.” Why ‘vadi-aa-ee’ Why to praise the God? It’s a very selfish act. When you think big you become big! God is an Infinity. Whenever the finite tunes in with the Infinity, it enriches itself. That’s the secret of prosperity: enrichment.” Yogi Bhajan, 8/26/88
“The very thought to get up at the ambrosial hour is dreadful. Now, we feel guilty if we don’t. [It’s] alright if we have not achieved anything in these fifteen years, at least we have this conscious feeling.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/3/84
“If you can do Sadhana, it will change [you], Sadhana will correct your emotional imbalances in spite of the fact what they are. You know, you have a sweeper. You sweep the whole house, it will be clean – that is automatic.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/27/82
“That is the highest Sadhana, that your presence should remind people of God. What more powerful miracle can there be that by your very presence you can invoke [Godhood] in people.” Yogi Bhajan, 8/1/82
“The greatest award of doing Sadhana is the person becoming [incapable of being defeated]. Sadhana is a self-victory and it is a victory over time and space. When you have to get up for Sadhana it is a defeat in itself because you don’t want to get up. When you get up, it is a victory [over] time and when you do it, it’s a victory [over] space, that’s what Sadhana [is]. Sadhana is only for you, Sadhana is a self-victory. Through Sadhana you can defeat your all miseries, misfortunes and handicaps. It’s a personal thing, […] it does not relate to anybody [else].” Yogi Bhajan, 7/7/81
“Meditation is for your self. Meditation is not for somebody else. When you come for sadhana, you come for yourself. When you pray, you pray for yourself. Therefore, it is useless asking in prayer, ‘Get me a car.’ That’s not prayer. That is projecting a desire. ‘God, give me a car.’ Don’t ask it. Just say ‘God, God, God.’ And if God appears, then say, ‘What kind of God are you? Don’t you know what I am asking for?’ I mean, if God doesn’t know what you need, who knows?” Yogi Bhajan, 7/15/82
“Sadhana is what? Get up in the morning, take a cold shower and take a cold shower to the extent that the cold water doesn’t become cold anymore. Then sit down and be yourself and meditate and chant, stretch your body, stretch your spinal column and stretch your body. These are sets. What is so wrong that you people cannot do it? I don’t understand this. Is it so wrong? Early morning, ambrosial hour is your time, that’s the only time. You have to work for yourself because you want to live.” Yogi Bhajan, 11/18/95
“Sadhana gives you grace, Sadhana gives you fearlessness, Sadhana gives you self, Sadhana gives denomination, domination, projection, polarity combination, equilibrium, respectability, totality, internal and external self knowledge, and it gives you purity, it gives you Divinity, dignity, grace, it gives you radiance, it gives you pranic Shakti, it gives you auric Shakti, it gives you metal of something which is ever shine, not seen, and you become metallically living grace. That is why loh, loh, loh means iron also, but loh means which can absorb the entire heat, that is called loh. When you go to Guru Ram Das house they put a big sheet of iron on which they make chapattis, have you seen that, that is called loh. Word is sarb loh, sarb loh does not mean anybody who wears all the iron about himself, it is a misappropriation of the reality of facts but sarb loh means that loh which takes the entire cool and heat of all the universe, still remains neutral. That is what Sadhana gives you. When you want to be bountiful, do Sadhana.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/30/80
“Once you have your own mind under your control, intuition gives you all the knowledge of the world. If you have control [over] your mind through social and structural things, you have answers for everything. And if you have control [over] your mind you can see the soul and God right within you.” Yogi Bhajan, 9/25/88
“The problem at this moment is the majority of us do not want to do sadhana. These unfortunate people are really cursed. With all the teachings and all the knowledge, isn’t it a curse? It is. Sometimes you use the children as an excuse, sometimes the husband. One way or the other, there is an excuse. To be realistic with you, an excuse is an excuse, and sadhana is sadhana. I know on some days, I am dead tired. I feel I can’t do my sadhana. Then what do I do? I go to the bathroom, I take cold water, and I wash my face again and again, and again and again, until I understand that I am fully awake. When I am doing my sadhana, sleep sometimes wants to overtake me; I get tired. Sometimes I get home late and I have to get up very early. Then I do pranayam and I apply some yogic locks. I do a lot of things that I have learned and I go through it as gracefully as a humble human being should.” Yogi Bhajan, 08/23/78
“I don’t care what your circumstances and environments are, if you can change your daily average pressure by balancing it in the morning with sadhana, and once a week, come to Gurdwara in a meditative, graceful, beautiful and pleasant fashion, then I don’t think there is any possibility that you can be destroyed.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/08/79
“Don’t forget one very simple thing: all that you are today is because of sadhana. You all started with sadhana, and you did it very well. Sadhana is what nourishes you and makes you a human being, shapes you into a powerful, meditative, constructive human being. It is what you need most in life, and you drop it.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/06/81
“Remember the victory, the Fateh belongs to those who are consistently in a discipline and who have the capacity to give their life for discipline. They are the one who shall feel absolutely victorious, it is my prayer and my wish, you all should get to experience that so you can enter the age of Aquarius with the experience of infinite capacity to enjoy as a human, so that shackles of limitation may fall apart and you may grow and you may show the world the path, the panth, the dharma.” Yogi Bhajan, 9/15/02
“The whole world may give you support…. but if your own mind does not support you, you will not be in a position to do anything in life. Your own mind cannot be controlled and guided and give you the support until it is brought to a discipline. That word which brings a mind to a discipline to support you is called “Mantra”. Man-Tra… to bring discipline to the mind. That is why we do Japa (Repetition of Mantra/Bani). Japa creates the heat. That is called Tapa; Tapa, that heat burns the karma. Out of the karma grows the kindness and it becomes Dharma. Out of that it grows the compassion. That is called “Sidhi”, that is called “power”. From that comes the word “Sadhu” who has controlled himself through the all aspect of life and that is what we call “sadhana”. Which you do not normally want to do. How many of you are doing regular sadhana?” Yogi Bhajan, 06/25/87
“What is sadhana? It is a process which you do every day to grow, to be. There is a fight in this lifetime: to be or not to be. Nobody can destroy you… You destroy yourself by not being yourself.”
Yogi Bhajan, 07/05/81
“We all live in daydream and then we mess up our life in night dream. So dream, dream, dream: somewhere along the line we have to come out of the dream and that is where we have to come to reality. That’s what Sadhana does. Sadhana brings us to reality, makes us to live it, makes us to face it. So we do not have our own animosity.” Yogi Bhajan, 3/15/83
“All these changes that you are seeing in your personality did not happen because you got counseled, or your teacher was great. You all changed because you wanted to change and you did sadhana. Sadhana changed you. All this other stuff is being done to keep you going. This is a rational approach, not an ultimate approach. The ultimate approach is when you want to change, and you do sadhana. Then you shall change.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/27/82
“In Sadhana the Sadhu lives.
In Sadhana the nectar of God’s Love rains down.
In Sadhana come the blessings of Simran, Awareness,
and Divine Understanding.
In Sadhana is the meditation of Raj Yoga.
In Sadhana see God’s glory.
In sadhana experience Infinity.
Sadhana is the daily meditation of the Sadhu. Oh Yogi!
Become one with God!”
Yogi Bhajan from Furman Khalsa (Book)
“The connection between your power and your projection is the mind; therefore it has to be a quick, clean, classified, qualified mind – a clean mind – that’s why you do sadhana. It’s a consciousness.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/11/82
“It is a human tendency to like to sleep between 3 am and 6 am. It’s natural. But if you can be alert enough to work on your mind, to confront the day, then you are alert enough to take care of your life. The reason you don’t get up early is not because you are lazy, tired or overworked – that’s all wrong. You do not get up early in the morning because the relationship between you and your mind is not established. Period.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/11/82
“Doing sadhana is not to please God; it is to please your own self, to clean your own self, to cleanse your own mind. You’ll find the brightness of the earth.”
Yogi Bhajan, 07/11/82
“Why repeat the Name of God? So that it enters our subconscious memory. Why do sadhana? So that our conscious memory can subconsciously relate to the Supreme Consciousness. These are acts for the Self; they are extremely selfish acts.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/11/82
“Getting up in the morning for Sadhana is totally a selfish act for personal strength, for personal intuition, for personal sharpness, for personal discipline and [overall] for personal absolute prosperity.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/14/89
“Sadhana is the most selfish act. Why early in the morning? Question is very simple. Why at ambrosial hours? Because that is where sun hits the earth at sixty degree. Why you go berserk in the evening? When sun hits at you angle sixty. It is sixty to sixty. No big deal. Uplift. You can’t reach the sun at three thirty. It is not. At your longitude, latitude there is no sun but the angle is correct. You must understand the things which have become rituals were realities. Simply we have never read, never understood, never explained. We think a bunch of stupid people get up three o’clock in the morning take cold shower sit down and say one word. Sat Nam, sat nam. Are they crazy? No they are not. You are crazy. You who get up with a cup of coffee. You are crazy. You do not get up consciously. If you do not get up consciously, you do not spend your day consciously, you do not work out consciously. That day is your bad day.” Yogi Bhajan, 1/4/89
“It is your birthright to be happy and happiness only comes to a disciple with a discipline. Those who do not seek discipline can never be happy.” Yogi Bhajan, 03/27/79
“You must understand one thing: karma cannot be wiped out; the sequence must lead to consequences. The only, the only way is through Sadhana. I can tell you that without Sadhana, you are as useless for positive change as a junk car is… You can talk for hours and hours and I can teach for years and years; but without Sadhana, you have no chance. Sadhana is a self- victory; and one who cannot have self-victory cannot have this Earth at all. I can bluntly tell you.” Yogi Bhajan, 1978
“Nobody is exempt from Divinity, nobody is exempt from the soul and food for the soul is the Sadhana of the man. And we make our soul hungry that corrupts our mind, hungry soul will corrupt the mind and corrupt mind will pollute your body.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/7/83
“Your spiritual strength has no meaning for you except that it gives you a mental control. Self mental control. Self mental control cannot be achieved by anything outside. Therefore it is true: sadhana, aradhana and prabhupati. It is true. It always shall be true. And those who do not do sadhana shall never be happy! No promise with them stands, and no virtues can be, and even if they become rich and prosperous, they will be stupid… unhappy stupids. Whether they are religious or they are unreligious, I don’t care! I talked to a human today, any human who has no sadhana is not worth trust. They are a useless fraud, a living fraud!” Yogi Bhajan, 09/25/88
“People who do not do sadhana, they do not do sadhana, and nobody can tell them to do it. When they want to reduce their unhappiness or their unhappiness becomes so unbearable… then they may do it. Otherwise they will find millions of excuses.” Yogi Bhajan, 09/25/88
“I am asking you to go in the world and find the richest, most influential and most powerful person. You will find three things: At one point that man shall have no answer. At one point, that man shall have no happiness. And at one point that man shall have no man in him. These are the three disqualifications of all men who have no control over their own mind.
These are the three virtues of sadhana:
”Because once you have your own mind under control, intuition will give you all the knowledge of the world.
If you have a control on your mind through your social and structural thing you have answer for everything.
And if you have control on your own mind, you can see the soul and God right within you.” Yogi Bhajan, 09/25/88
“Those who have reached a state of mind of service for others, you’ll find that they leave their body between 3 to 6 a.m. You can watch their dead body between that time. That proves that all men of God and servants of God and part of God at that time is active. Therefore, we who are small in number should not be small in our attitude. We who are small in our resources should not be small in our prosperity. We who are small in body should not be small in our grace. And all this what is required to come out, is going to come out of the mind… and the mind doesn’t follow any rules. Once the cork is out, genie is out and it is going to do what it is going to do. Therefore, please understand, sadhana is essential! Daily bath is essential that you may not smell bad. Food is essential that you may not feel weak. Smiles are essential that you may not drown into sorrow. Money is essential that you have to move and pay, and buy and get. Money is a medium of services and energy. Everything is essential… but if sadhana is not essentially done, your everything will fall apart. Let me put it in that way. And those of you who feel that by doing no sadhana, you are going to make it: no! I tell you what it is. You did sadhana for a while and you made it. Now that you are not doing it you are actually falling apart. That’s why those who are not with us are not with us because they didn’t want to. They fell out, they went away, because they had no juice, no energy left. They couldn’t grow. They didn’t have the answer. A Mukhia Singh Sahib is not a Mukhia Singh Sahib who does not have the answer. A leader is not a leader who doesn’t lead.” Yogi Bhajan, 09/25/88
“I came to this country with you and I told you three words are the greatest words of God: sadhana, aradhana and prabhupati. And I also told you you will never hear them in any book or from any holy man. And I also told you this is the beginning and end and solution of ALL what you are going through! And today on this full moon day when your minds are open, in 1988, when the calamity on the Sikh nation is going to go away… when the birth of the Panth Khalsa will be bright, shining and beautiful… when future will be remembered and life will be joyful and peaceful for all mankind… I tell you today – through you to the entire mankind — there are only three words to live by: sadhana, aradhana and prabhupati! It was true in the beginning, it is true today and it shall ever be true!” Yogi Bhajan, 09/25/88
“If you want health, happiness and to be holy, then you’ll do sadhana, aradhana and prabhupati. Everything else is bogus, you are all bogus and you will die as bogus! Everything is painful, you are in pain, and you will die in pain, whether you get college degrees, tons of money, lots of power, great ego maniac Americans or as very humble bag person, it doesn’t make any difference.”
Yogi Bhajan, 09/25/88
“Those who have no gift of sadhana with them, shall have no gift of happiness. Let us talk in a direct mathematical proportion. Your sadhana is a proportionate source of happiness in your life.
Neither your marriage, nor your wife, nor your children, nor your future, nor your promises, nor your teacher can do it. He can only tell you what sadhana is. He can tell you to do sadhana. He can remind you. Postman never writes the letter. Letter is only delivered by the postman. And my virtue in your life is only that your destiny has to achieve that highest promise which your soul made to God… and God gave you the word. And my promise is to remind you that these 3 words decide everything: Sadhana, aradhana and prabhupati!
Sadhana. Aradhana means do the sadhana as prescribed. Prabhupati means you become master of the God. Pati means husband. Prabhu means the God. The creative unknown means prabhu. I’m just telling you in a very simple English so nobody can feel confused. And this is a realism and that is what Nanak the man said. That is what Nanak the Guru said. And that is what the Nanak God said. Amrit Velaa sach naao, vadiaaee veechaar. Karamee aavai kaparaa nadaree mokh duaar. Kiv sachiaaraa hoeeai kiv koorai tuutai paal.
How we can become truthful, elegant, sophisticated, divine, graceful and how can this false wall be broken up? And how can we see the freedom and how we’ll be covered? How we’ll have a shield? And to that Nanak answers… Nanak the man, Nanak the Guru and Nanak the God answers: “Amrit Velaa sach naao, vadiaaee veechaar. Karamee aavai kaparaa nadaree mokh duaar.”, and then under the seal of my office, under the hand of my jurisdiction: “Nanak evai jaaneeai sabh aape sachiaar.” Thus under the command of that One who knows all truth,
Nanak says so, and vouches it!
Those who are Sikhs who are miserable, they should be miserable and they will be miserable, because they are not doing sadhana. They are not doing aradhana and God is not with them. Those
who are non-Sikhs and they are not doing sadhana, they are not doing aradhana and God is not with them. Your soul… the source of your life… cannot look at the life of Creative God, without that clarity and control of the mind. You can get a very high priced camera. If the lens is broken and it is foggy you are not going to get any picture… doesn’t matter what. Don’t you understand that that law applies?
When I see somebody with a camera, I see them taking care of it. I see them taking a very fine, beautiful kind of a paper to clean the lens of the camera so that it may not get scratched and rubbed. I’m asking that idiot… super idiot… how can you not use that same technology with your own mind? Why can’t you use that sophisticated subtle touch of divinity to clean the clumsiness and the fog of the mind, and see through your soul the divinity and God in every living aspect, and be happy and joyful? Why you are enjoying your stupidity so much, and in your mud clinging to the pole of death? Why you are dying a useless life? Why not you are willing to live in that height and see the vastness of the Creative God? Why this smallness?
I hope you will understand that there is no power in the world which God can bestow on you but the opportunity of sadhana.
When you do sadhana, and your mind is controlled, your life is together, then you can be “niaaraa” (Uniquely you).” Yogi Bhajan, 09/25/88
“What is sadhana? It’s a committed prayer. It is something which you want to do, have to do, and which is being done by you… Sadhana is self-enrichment. It is not something which is done to please somebody or to gain something. Sadhana is a personal process in which you bring out your best.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/16/82
“You love your children? You do. They are beautiful. Isn’t that innocent soul in you also your life child? Have you kissed your soul? Have you hugged your soul? Have you communicated with the soul in the morning at the ambrosial hours when there is absolutely no disturbance? Sadhana is nothing but where a disciplined one, the lover, talks to our own soul. It is nothing but where one cleans his (or her) own mind. Sadhana is nothing but where one prepares for the day to become kind and compassionate for everyone, including the enemies.”
Yogi Bhajan, 04/19/78
“What is sin? Sin is a fluctuation in the flow of spirit like the high and low tide. When a person is in very low spirits, he cannot represent the low of his spirit. The tide is out and, nobody can come into dock. This is the biggest sin of all. When the tlde is in, you are bright, beautiful and wonderful. You have the spirit to match up to everything. How can you keep the tide in? How can you maintain your depth? I can tell you the answer in one word: sadhana. I can lecture without end. But I have already told you the truth. There is no other truth. All situations can totally be taken care of if a person decides to do sadhana every morning.” Yogi Bhajan, 1980
“Don’t do sadhana for your husband, and don’t do sadhana for anything else. Do sadhana for yourself. If you cannot get up in the morning at 3 o’clock, if you don’t take your cold shower, if you don’t massage your body, if you don’t do all those things, you pay during the day. Everything is in balance. If you don’t sharpen the knife, what do you think you can cut with it? If you don’t sharpen your mind, if you do not shine your soul, what are you going to do during the day?” Yogi Bhajan, 7/31/84
“Getting up in the ambrosial hour and getting up when the Sun hits the longitude and latitude of place of your at sixty degree diagonal, when the power is primal, you getup, you sit down, you meditate, you clean yourself then you can face the day as good as you want to face. You will remain you doesn’t matter what. Now question is tragic question is that is the only time when you want to sleep. So suffer whole day or suffer in the morning that is your choice, that I can’t make it for you. That choice nobody can make for you, that is your freewill. You want to getup at the ambrosial hour, you want to take a cold shower so that your capillaries can circulate enough blood. This numbness you are all facing and all the coffee and stimulated drink you take is because your capillaries are dead and there is no way in the medical system to keep the capillary young and open and the pulse and the impulse correlating to the beat of the heart. A capillary is thinner than the hair where your red blood comes to blue blood back to the heart. It’s a game of the arteries and the veins and when you take a cold shower not just and then get out that doesn’t work you stand under cold shower and you massage yourself, so all the blood rushes to the all capillaries of the entire body it hurts what should I tell you? It hurts, but it keeps you healthy and young physically. A meditation early in the morning forget it man tell me ten o’clock fine morning, but it keeps you alert and you are what you eat I ignored I suffer, you ignore it you suffer. Eat right you will be all right, eat junk you will be a punk.” Yogi Bhajan, 1/4/91
“If you do not do the sadhana, where will the spirit and strength come from to carry you through? Times are getting heavier, let your soul and your heart lift you through the fear and hallucinations of time and space into the infinite love and joy of God and Guru.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/21/81 (from a personal letter)
“Fall in love with your sadhana and give yourself the gift of mental discipline. Master your mind; you will master your environment.
A yogi remains unaffected by good and bad.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/07/98 (from a personal letter)
“That existence which does not have discipline cannot deliver. That deliverance is the measurement of personal happiness, and that needs discipline in every facet of life. Within your discipline, whether you serve or you de-serve, within your discipline, you live or you don’t live, within your discipline you eat or you don’t eat, within your discipline, you are the discipline. If you are master of that discipline, which is you, you are all God. There is no other.” Yogi Bhajan, 07/20/96
“I tell you today and I’ll tell you tomorrow and I’ll tell you every day: You have only one friend – you and your discipline which will give you all that you need. The rest are all promises. After studying every scripture of every religion and what I went through, I have found that there are three words: Sadhana, Aradhana, and Prabhupati. Sadhana means discipline, Aradhana means perfecting the discipline, and Prabhupati means you will become the Lord Master of God Itself.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/20/1996
“The zodiac sign is always symbolic to a person. It means that this is your base. This is what you have been granted in relation to the animal nature. From this comparison of the animal nature, you are supposed to grow into a human being with a caliber that is very noble and graceful. Zodiac sign symbols were made for man. Astronomy is what the heavens are. Astrology is how the constellations are affecting, from the heavens, our existence on the earth and what we should do to rise above it. I studied astrology for four and a half years. It is a wonderful science. It is a mathematical science, but you make it a mystery. A lot of people do not know how to interpret it. That’s where the majority goof. Astrology is like a weather chart. Once you know it, you only will know how the life journey shall be. But in between there can be a lot of changes for which you sometimes do not have the concept. Then you misinterpret a lot of symptoms and signs. But, it is a good science. Every square can be cut in half and made into two triangles, a double triangle. In Indian astrology, if they say there’s a square in your life, they’ll give you a mantra to remove the square. We’re not against astrology, but we don’t need it. A person who does sadhana every morning takes care of the whole thing. You cannot achieve in life, you cannot crystallize your self in your life without discipline. There are scientific terms we are all familiar with: distillation, sublimation and crystallization. Distillation is to purify. That is the everyday sadhana that we do. It is a distillation to remove impurities like a filter. Sublimation is next. It is more subtle and complete. It is the transformation of something to a higher state of energy. Sublimation leaves all deeply imbedded impurity behind. It is just like taking a block of sulfur and heating it up so all the sulfur becomes a vapor and the impurities remain below. That is what kirtan is – sublimation through word. Last is crystallization. When purification is advanced, you collect the substance around a single pure crystal. Even that process of refinement has steps and stages. The seed must be perfect. The temperature and environments must be constant. If all things are held steady in perfection then you get a perfect gem. Usually the resulting crystallization has four levels of quality. The most familiar is “opaque” or raw rock form. It is the right substance, but it may be covered on the surface and have many flaws in its structure so it does not have its full strength or transparency. The next quality is “semi-precious gem” It is clearer, without a surface cover and a few flaws. The third quality is the “gem state.” That is beautiful. It has few to no flaws and can carry clear light. The fourth quality is very rare indeed. It is flawless, with perfect structure and strength. That gem has a perfect cut in its facets and can reflect everything perfectly, with no distortion.”
Yogi Bhajan, Women in Training XII, 1987
“Now question is how fast. Some people say ‘Why we do Sadhana and why Kundalini Yoga?’ I have two purposes only. First of all Kundalini Yoga will cut through all garbage, it’s a fast, it’s a time-saving device. You don’t have to go through long distance routes to come to the same destination, you know. You don’t have to fly from here to New York to San Francisco, you can take a direct route. Normally our achievement is Los Angeles to San Francisco via New York or Boston. That’s what we do, that’s how long-route life is. But shortcut is from Los Angeles to San Francisco forty-five minutes, period. That’s how Kundalini Yoga works. I appreciate it, when I was myself a student. We can get it, we can get it quick, we can get into experience. Neither we have to write a book about it nor we have to say anything, we are, we are, that’s it. That’s one direct benefit. Number two, if you do Sadhana every day, it’s very self-livening, it’s very self- accelerating. One thing you cannot do, you cannot do your own Sadhana without a commitment. You do not understand that. I am not saying that you don’t want to do. You do want to do, but you cannot do. Not that you want to cheat or you want to avoid it or you want to be negative about it, because this is how the polarity works. If a person decides fanatically that I am going to do my Sadhana, doesn’t matter what, then time and space cannot affect that person. If a person decides to cleanse himself everyday, then weaknesses shall not have any toll. There will be no memory lapse, there will be no mood nonsense, I mean there are million things…” Yogi Bhajan, 03/06/91
“There’s no substitution for victory. And there’s no equal to nobility – noble dress, noble behavior, noble conduct, noble code, noble appearance, noble jewelry, noble virtues, noble everything. We decided to belong to purity. We brought our dress to the standard of purity and we are trying to bring our conduct to purity. We want to be pure. We want to have a meditative mind. That’s why we do Sadhana. I am explaining to you that emotions are like little waves which don’t carry you anywhere, but nobility is like the trade winds. It will take you where you belong.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/92
“I am not the way you want to look at me; I am the way I am. I just do because I have to do. Because what I have learned in my life is that duty is beauty—there is nothing to match it. Victory is victory–there’s nothing to substitute it. Character is divine– there is nothing equal to it. Equilibrium is an experience which you cannot do any other way but through sadhana; there is no other way to it. Life has a category and in this category there’s a ‘fantasticness.’ Life is a fantastic thing! Our commitment is a most fantastic thing. Then our living to that commitment is the ultimate fantastic thing. That is the 3ho way of life: healthy, happy, holy. First commit, then live to the commitment and then experience the commitment. There’s no other way to be happy.”
Yogi Bhajan, 09/80
“We do sadhana selfishly. We don’t do sadhana to please God. Take it out of your mind. I have never done sadhana with an absolute feeling that I’ll please God, or I’ll have good luck or my tomorrow will be fine. I have absolutely no such understanding– zero percent. I do sadhana so that when I’m put on the frying pan, I’ll cry just a little less than anybody else. That’s all. I’ll have maybe 10% more chance of self-control than another person. Sadhana has nothing to do with God, the Almighty or anything else. Sadhana is “I take a bath, because I don’t want to stink. I do sadhana, because I don’t want to go out of control.” At that time I have to change my–what you call it?–Gears! If I have done sadhana, I can change them through the whole day.”
Yogi Bhajan, 02/90
“Any abnormal mental attitude or any normal depressed mental attitude can be beaten out by meditation. Meditation is not an Eastern science, it’s not a Western religion, it is not of yogis and swamis […] It is a technical process to bring your mind under your own directive happiness. It is to give you a clear and clean subconscious mind so that you can always have a new approach, an opening bud like a new thing to your life. That is why we say “don’t start your day without Sadhana”. Yogi Bhajan, 5/17/79
“Those who do Sadhana, do it the way, as they put self into it, whole hearted Sadhana is called Aradhana. Prabupati, you become master of Almighty God, which created you, and I tell you why God likes you, because every father wants his son to be better than him, every God wants, every human to be better than Him. So, God can be represented a peace, tranquility and everlasting identity and that’s what God is. Therefore please whatever I have said, I have said as it came though me. I like you to take this tape and repeat it and understand me what I am trying to tell you. I am telling you, the life is a gift, it’s a gift, it’s a gift. You have been befitting to get this gift.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/7/90
“A student she asked me, “Sir, eight years I have done Sadhana without break.” I said, “Do you think I am your spiritual teacher?” She said, “Yes.” I said, “Break the Sadhana for fifteen days.” On fifth day she said, “Sir, I can’t live without it.” I said, “Do you realize what could have happened to you if eight years you would not have done Sadhana?” “Sadhana gives you grace, Sadhana gives you fearlessness, Sadhana gives you self, Sadhana gives denomination, domination, projection, polarity combination, equilibrium, respectability, totality, internal and external self knowledge, and it gives you purity, it gives you Divinity, dignity, grace, it gives you radiance, it gives you pranic Shakti, it gives you auric Shakti, it gives you metal of something which is ever shine, not seen, and you become metallically living grace. That is why loh, loh, loh means iron also, but loh means which can absorb the entire heat, that is called loh. When you go toGuru Ram Das house they put a big sheet of iron on which they make chapattis, have you seen that, that is called loh. Word is sarb loh, sarb loh does not mean anybody who wears all the iron about himself, it is a misappropriation of the reality of facts but sarb loh means that loh which takes the entire cool and heat of all the universe, still remains neutral. That is what Sadhana gives you. When you want to be bountiful, do Sadhana, that is attraction and one thing you will find my dear, whether you belong to dharma or you don’t belong to dharma, you belong to dharma then fine, you don’t belong to dharma then you belong to karma, but somewhere the karma has to stop, dharma.” Yogi Bhajan, 7/30/80
